16/06/2015 - Library Leaders Focus on Digital Innovation at SCL Seminar 2015

Insight Media attended the annual conference 2015 at Warwick University and were delighted to exhibit at the venue again and have the opportunity to meet with many of the delegates and associates visiting this year.

The event, as always attracts key senior library staff and an array of impressive speakers. This year’s programme focussing on Digital Innovation offered opportunities to learn and discover new ways to approach and embrace digital initiatives and welcome ideas and enthusiastic views.

Held on 4th and 5th June 2015 the Society of Chief Librarians kicked off their annual 2 day conference, bringing together more than 130 library leaders, partners and Government figures to discuss digital innovation and best practice in libraries. Digital Landscapes: The Future for Libraries - will highlight how libraries are ensuring that customers’ digital needs are being met, focusing on everything from the Government’s investment in free Wi-Fi in libraries to ambitious plans to develop a single digital platform for public library services.

Ed Vaizey, Minister for Culture, said“It was a pleasure to speak to the delegates at the start of the SCL conference. The people in our libraries are the heart and soul of this fantastic service and I value the opportunity to hear from them on how the Government can help support the work they do in communities.

“We fought hard to ensure libraries received the necessary funding in the recent budget and we were able to secure £7.4m, which will help ensure all libraries have access to free Wi-Fi.  I know this is a small part of what is needed for libraries to embrace the digital arena, but it is a vital step. Digital is increasingly the way that people are interacting and libraries should offer themselves as places that embrace and encourage this.”

Free Wi-Fi in libraries is one of the hot topics at the moment and indeed a focus point at SCL.  This provides a great opportunity for many authorities to provide public wireless access in all their libraries.  Priority 1 funding is aimed at libraries who haven’t implemented public Wi-Fi at all or only in some of their branches.

Insight Media as one of the major suppliers of wireless solutions to public libraries is looking to help authorities in the preparation of their bids (by end of July) to help secure this vital funding.

We will be contacting all our customers and other authorities with information when the specification and other details are produced by Arts Council England.

We welcome the opportunity to discuss your wireless requirements and options in more detail and would be pleased to offer advice and assistance.
