Devon’s Doris goes wireless with iCAM

Devon's Online Roving Information Service (Doris) is free for any adult living in Devon who wishes to contact the council or find out about local services in their area.  The mobile information centre gives Devon’s residents an opportunity to find out about the work of Devon County Council and other national and local public services.

The hotspot provided by Insight Media enhances the current service and is a natural extension to the existing facilities for residents within Devon.  However Devon ICT Services, as part of the project requirements wanted a solution for Doris that would also provide additional functionality so the vehicle could be deployed and used as an incident support vehicle in Devon.  In the case of a major emergency the vehicle could be used as a support unit, deployed to the disaster site so the emergency services could take advantage of the Internet to access their in house services.

Doris, with 6 computers on board, as well as a Hotspot, is for use by members of the public. A broadband Internet connection via satellite enables visitors to find out about any subject they wish.  The vehicle was designed and built in 2003.  Her vital statistics are:

Weight :        8.3 tonnes Devon's Online Roving Information Service (Doris)
Length: 28’ (8.5 meters)
Width:  8’ 3" (2.5 meters)
Height: 13’ (3.96 meters)
